Do you like those animated DreamScene desktops but don’t own Windows Vista Ultimate? Here’s a hack that will enable DreamScene videos on Windows Vista Home Premium and Business editions.

1) Download the following zip file.

2) Unpack the content to a folder.

3) Right-click on InstallDreamScene.bat and select Run As Administrator.

4) Answer “Y” to continue and restart Windows Vista once finished.

5) Right-click on your desktop and select Personalize > Desktop Background.

6) You should be able to select videos now in addition to pictures.

Some FAQs:

a) Can I run .dream files using this hack?
No, Deskscapes requires Windows Vista Ultimate to install.

b) I still can’t run DreamScene videos. Why?
Make sure the Aero theme is activated.

c) What type of videos are supported?
MPEG and WMV video files.

d) The hack didn’t work for me. Are there any other options?
The automatic installation may not work because of your permission settings - make sure you’re logged in as Administrator and turn off UAC temporarily. If it still doesn’t work you’ll have to manually copy the files to the appropriate folders:

- copy DreamScene.dll to %WinDir%\System32\ folder.

- copy DreamScene.dll.mui to %WinDir%\System32\en-US\ folder.

- rename themecpl.dll in %WinDir%\System32 to themecpl.dll.original.

- copy the patched version of themecpl.dll to %WinDir%\System32\ folder.

- rename %WinDir%\System32\en-US\themecpl.dll.mui to themecpl.dll.mui.original.

- copy the patched version of themecpl.dll.mui to %WinDir%\System32\en-US\.

- import and merge DreamScene.reg to registry.

- restart Windows Vista.
